Stay Safe Around Water this Summer: Important Advice for Oulton Academy Students

As summer heats up, many of us at Oulton Academy will be spending time at local lakes, rivers, and canals. While enjoying the water is a great way to cool off, it's important to stay safe. Here are some essential tips to ensure a fun and secure summer, using information from the Royal Life Saving Society UK, the Canal & River Trust, and Wakefield District Safeguarding Children Partnership. You can also find more information in our Summer Safeguarding Leaflet.

General Water Safety Tips:

  • Ensure Adult Supervision: Always have a responsible adult present when you are near water. Never go alone, especially in unfamiliar areas.
  • Follow Safety Instructions: Pay attention to posted signs and local guidelines. More information can be found on the Royal Life Saving Society UK's Water Safety Page.
  • Know Your Limits: Swim in areas that match your skill level and avoid overestimating your abilities. Understand the risks involved in open water swimming.
  • Wear Life Jackets: When boating or engaging in water sports, always wear a life jacket. This can significantly increase your chances of survival in case of an accident.
  • Supervise Younger Swimmers: Keep a close watch on children and never leave them unattended. Children can get into trouble quickly and unexpectedly.

Canal and Lock Safety:

  • Stay Away from the Edge: Canals can have slippery banks and hidden currents. Stay a safe distance from the edge to avoid accidental falls. For more detailed advice, visit the Canal & River Trust's Water Safety for Teenagers and Young People.
  • Avoid Swimming in Canals: The water in canals can be deeper and colder than expected, with strong currents near locks. It's best to avoid swimming in these areas entirely.
  • Be Cautious Around Locks: Locks can have powerful water flows and machinery. Never play or swim near them. These areas are particularly dangerous due to the potential for sudden changes in water levels and strong currents.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer. Stay safe, stay smart, and have fun!
