Curriculum Overview
Rationale and Entitlement
We believe that all students can achieve great things.
Oulton Academy is committed to creating an ambitious curriculum for all of our students. At Oulton Academy we believe that an ambitious curriculum is an entitlement for all students regardless of their starting points or prior learning to access the full curriculum. Oulton Academy has the same academic, technical/ vocational ambitions for almost all learners.
Students begin their time at Oulton Academy studying an exciting programme of English, maths, science, geography, history, a modern foreign language, physical education, digital literacy, religious education and citizenship studied through our Life programme as well as our creative curriculum of art, music, drama and technology subjects such as product design, food technology and textiles.
Our ambitious curriculum reflects the national curriculum and consists of a broad range of subjects. We encourage students to maintain a suitable breadth of study whilst providing the ability for students to pursue their passions. Year 9 acts as a culmination of the study undertaken in year 7 and 8 with students exploring areas in greater depth. This will give them a wide array of knowledge that will support them in becoming GCSE ready by the time they begin their full GCSE studies in year 10.
As students’ progress through the Academy they continue to study English (both literature and language), maths and at least two GCSEs in Science. In year 9 students have the option to specialise in History or Geography and if they wish to study both areas to GCSE level we will support this.
At GCSE level these aspirations must be facilitated by a balanced curriculum. Our courses are designed to increase students’ life chances by making them expert students, confident communicators and by helping them to be future ready.

To gain the English Baccalaureate students must study English Language, English Literature, maths, at least two GCSEs in Science, History or Geography and a modern foreign language. Any student who wishes to can access the full suite of English Baccalaureate (more info here) subjects is able to. Due to their increasing aspirations and self-confidence an increasing proportion of students are doing so. In addition to the English Baccalaureate students have access to a broad range of optional courses including vocational and traditional GCSE courses.
