Geography Department Achieves Centre of Excellence Award!
The Geography Department at Oulton Academy has been praised for its strong vision and dedication to high-quality education. The department fosters collaboration, teamwork, and professional development, which are evident in both the curriculum and lesson planning. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed, clearly outlining the skills, knowledge, and understanding students need to develop at each key stage. It is inspiring, enriching students intellectually and encouraging them to take moral, social, and environmental responsibility as global citizens.
The department has also been recognised for addressing the unique challenges faced by its students, such as high levels of disadvantage. By fostering a culture that emphasises cultural capital and global awareness, the department has seen significant improvements in GCSE results and student engagement. Initiatives such as connecting lessons to career opportunities and working with Newcastle University to introduce geographical careers have been particularly impactful, helping students understand the wider world and their place within it.

We have worked tirelessly to improve and innovate the provision provided to our students as a department and receiving this honour from such a world-renowned body is incredible. I couldn't be prouder of us!'

Regular off-site trips and local area studies complement classroom learning, while innovative methods like "live model marking" and literacy-focused tasks enhance student engagement. The department’s commitment to continuously refining its curriculum and sharing best practices with others has earned it the prestigious Secondary Geography Quality Mark with Centre of Excellence, recognising its outstanding contribution to geography education.
