Intent

In Health and Social Care, an Oulton Academy student will leave with the skills and knowledge to confidently consider a career in the caring profession. They will have developed key skills of empathy, communication and independent learning, which will equip them for future success both in terms of a career and, more importantly, in terms of living a healthy, happy life.

Objectives

Our curriculum is organised in such a way that provides our students with the opportunity to learn expected behaviours and be successful in their learning so that they can achieve our Academy Values.  Our strategic intent is therefore very simple:

  • To provide a diversity of knowledge, which over time, cumulatively builds to provide the cultural literacy that enables students to function in society.
  • To enable all students to enjoy learning and experience success.
  • Take into account individual needs.
  • To create a culture of high expectation and aspiration to raise standards of attainment and progress.
  • Develop confident and responsible individuals who can make a positive contribution to society and live safely and independently.
  • Enables students to be effective in their chosen career and to understand the importance of values in their everyday life.

Implementation

Our passage through life does not always run smoothly or to a set pattern; it can often be uneven, with many people and circumstances influencing it such as the birth of siblings, marriage, divorce, death of close relatives, health, employment etc. Our curriculum design will allow learners to investigate the main life processes that will occur with each life stage: develop an awareness and understanding of the key events that may happen and the effects of these during the lifespan of an individual, helping to identify the need for additional support. A sensitive approach as to why progress through life stage(s) may be different will allow thoughtful debate. We are also passionate about exposing our learners to real world contexts and as such we provide opportunities for them to develop knowledge of the Health, Social Care and the Early Years system, to produce suitable support plans for individuals encountering different life struggles and produce thoughtful and purposeful ways to promote both physical and mental health linked to real world issues. Appropriate levels of communication, both written and verbal, are developed during our students’ course of study so that it can be suitably applied in real world situations.

Review and evaluate

The Health and Social team are life long learners and so are reflective on all our practises, we are proactive in investigating best practise and sharing this learning and understanding across our network of schools.
