Intent

The PE department’s vision is:

‘To inspire all our students to participate and enjoy physical activity’.

The academy’s student demographic is spread over the entire range of deprivation indices within the UK with many students being in areas of <3 for Crime, Living Environment, Health and Disability and Education and Training.

Our ambitious curriculum is intended to drive the mantra that no student is left behind when striving for a healthy and sustainable health style. In line with the academy’s values, the curriculum drives the agenda that respect begins with one’s self-respect and a mutual respect for our community. All students across all year groups are expected to actively participate in the curriculum which is mapped to the national curriculum to create an ambitious curriculum for all and is specifically designed to combine a rich knowledge base with a love of exercise and teamwork.

Learning about the nutritional requirements for a healthy and active lifestyle, and how it can be refined to meet the demands of different sports. Finally, they will learn about the nature of sport injury and how these can be avoided

By participating in core PE or as part of our extensive extracurricular programme which provides students with the opportunity to participate in local sporting events as well as visiting regional and national events, students gain further experience of teams and how they take responsibility for each other as they develop. The transferable skills and values that our students acquire are the cornerstones which give them the necessary foundations to become successful, respected and motivated young adults post 16.

At KS3 & KS4 core PE, our curriculum is intended to empower students to take responsibility for their organisation, enable them to show resilience and motivation when taking part in activities which they may not naturally enjoy. Leadership is shown through working as part of a team, along with self-control and reflection to work on new key skills together with problem solving the many challenges which constantly occur within sports. These key values are an integral part of our ambitious PE curriculum and link to ideas such as lifelong learning and confidence to tackle challenging situations as they arise.

In the KS4 Sport Science qualification, students further demonstrate our core values: Resilience and motivation are demonstrated when preparing for examined areas of the course, and the preparation of coursework. Independent skills of self-control and reflection are required when completing controlled coursework tasks and meeting deadlines. Respect and leadership are also required throughout the course as they contribute to a positive learning environment and therefore the students will be comfortable to join group discussions, Q&A sessions along with following the correct procedures for completing fitness tests, practice exam papers and completing coursework.

Implementation

The curriculum is delivered by passionate and experienced teachers who are well resourced and who benefit from the latest CPD in terms of both subject specific materials as well as latest pedagogy Embedding Formative Assessment - SSAT (ssatuk.co.uk). All teachers have access to an appropriate professional body:

Association for Physical Education

Embedding Formative Assessment - SSAT (ssatuk.co.uk)Key stage 3 & 4 core PE: students will be taught a variety of different sports to develop key ideas, skills and principles in each sport. Students will begin to gain an insight into some of the key theoretical aspects of sport science, such as the components of a warm up and major muscle groups.

The use of iterative starters and warm up activities will consolidate learning and the use of practical Gold Zone sessions will allow students the opportunity to push themselves and further refine skills in real and modified game situations.

BTEC Sport Science will be offered over a two-year period, with the challenging compulsory unit undertaken first where students will learn about the principles of training which underpin all physical and athletic improvements. Students will learn about the nutritional requirements for a healthy active lifestyle, and how it can be refined to meet the demands of different sports. Finally, they will learn about the nature of sport injury and how these can be avoided, treated and recovered from to provide the best opportunities for further sporting success.

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all students, it allows students access to physical exercise and sport which is very important for both mental and physical health, along with providing a base for continued activity throughout life. The qualification aspect of the curriculum will ensure students are also developing an understanding of the science behind sport, which will give them a rich knowledge base for a healthy lifestyle, including ways to avoid injury; how to effectively train the body and keep fit; deal with pressurised situations to reduce stress and to understand diet and nutrition.

Year 7

What will I be studying?

Each half term, students will participate in two different activities. These activities in year 7 will be the starting point for their journey through the PE curriculum at Oulton Academy.

The activities will follow a set plan, and in some cases will coincide with seasonal, cultural and relevant activities. For example, students will study football, during the traditional football season to assist those who participate for local clubs and teams.

Students will cover traditional sports such as football, rugby, gymnastics, netball and athletics, along with additional activities such as handball, softball, volleyball and dance.

Career Links

Studying physical education can lead to careers in the following areas: coaching, teaching, sport management, sport leadership, physiotherapy, sport science, media and personal training to name a few.

The key skills developed through physical education, such as teamwork, leadership and resilience will help all students succeed in whatever they choose to do in their future careers.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will take place following each activity, where each student will achieve a grade based on their knowledge and ability to perform in that activity area. The grade will be based upon departmental criteria of the expected ability level for each year group. Assessment will take the form of a game or final performance where the students will be performing to the best of their ability to show the progress that has been made throughout the unit.

Which websites should I use to support my learning?

As PE in year 7 is primarily a practical subject, there are no specific websites to support learning. However, using websites such as youtube.com or skysports.com to watch highlights and clips of relevant activities would be useful to help with knowledge and understanding. Also, regular upkeep on sports news would also be beneficially, so websites such bbb.co.uk/sport would be a good place to start.

Year 8

What will I be studying?

Each half term, students will participate in two different activities. These activities in year 8 will be where the students start to develop the skills taught to them in year 7

The activities will follow a set plan in order to build on the year 7 curriculum, and in some cases will coincide with seasonal, cultural and relevant activities. For example, students will study netball, during the traditional netball season to assist those who participate for local clubs and teams.

Students will cover traditional sports such as football, rugby, gymnastics, netball and athletics, along with additional activities such as handball, softball, volleyball and dance.

KS4 - Sports Science

CAMBRIDGE NATIONAL IN SPORT SCIENCE - OCR

What will I be studying?

Cambridge National in Sport Science will encourage you to think for yourself about the scientific world of sport, while putting those theories and concepts into practice in both theoretical and practical sport situations. As part of the Cambridge National, you’ll cover: preparing for sports, reducing the risk of injuries; fitness testing – planning and delivering your own fitness tests, and learning how that data can be used effectively; how our bodies provide us with energy and the ability to move, and how exercise can help our bodies become stronger; how nutrition and a healthy diet impacts performance in sport, creating nutrition plans.

Career Links

By developing applied knowledge and practical skills, this course will help give you the opportunity to progress on to A Levels, a Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity, an apprenticeship or university. Sport science has a wealth of opportunities. You could become anything from a personal trainer to a sport therapist or nutritionist at a premier league club.

You’ll develop a range of skills to help you succeed not only in the workplace but in other subjects too. These skills include: analytical skills; creative thinking; research and planning; problem solving; verbal communication; leadership & team working.

How will I be assessed?

Sport science is a vocational course, meaning you will be assessed in a variety of ways, including practical, coursework and examinations.

You will study three units in total, with the first two being assessed via the production of coursework. This coursework, or NEA, will combine the information you have been taught, along with some practical ability and finally your ability to apply it all together to produce a piece of work based on a set brief.

The final unit is assessed via a traditional exam, which will take place in the final year of the course.

Your overall grade will then be a combination of the three scores you acquire which will then equate to a grade, from a distinction star at level 2, through to a pass at level 1.
