Oulton Academy Brings Maths to Life with M&G Concert Challenge
Oulton Academy recently welcomed staff from M&G for an immersive, maths-based enterprise challenge that saw two groups of Year 7 students step into the roles of event planners and business moguls.
Planning the Ultimate Production
The session focused on the real-world application of numeracy, tasking students with the complex job of costing out and planning a full-scale concert. Working in teams, students had to make critical financial decisions to ensure their production was both spectacular and profitable.
The challenge required students to:
- Conduct Market Research: Teams analysed data to understand their audience and inform their planning.
- Budget and Costing: Using their maths skills, students had to balance the books while choosing artists, catering options, and stage layouts they could afford.
- Design the Venue: Based on their research, students created physical models of their ideal concert venues.
- Advertise and Present: To round off the session, students created advertising campaigns for their productions and presented their final business ideas to the wider group.
Real-World Skills
This real-world maths approach allowed students to develop essential transferable skills, including communication, resilience, and teamwork, while seeing firsthand how mathematics underpins diverse careers in finance and event management.
Oulton Academy would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff from M&G for delivering such an exciting and interactive session. By bringing the curriculum to life, they have helped our Year 7 students see the incredible possibilities that a strong foundation in mathematics can unlock.
