Oulton Academy Year 8s Triumph at Industrial Cadets Bronze Awards
Our talented Year 8 students recently showcased their innovation and dedication at the University of York for the final of the Industrial Cadets Bronze Awards.
This event marked the culmination of an intensive 8-week project that challenged the group to design a fully self-sufficient eco-city.
Throughout the project, the team meticulously planned a sustainable urban future, focusing on critical pillars including:
- Energy and Resource Management
- Healthy Populations
- Food Security
- Waste Management
- Transportation
- Employability
- Public Attitudes
To manage such a massive task, the students divided roles to specialise in specific focus areas. Their hard work resulted in a comprehensive 22-page report, a detailed physical model of their city, and a professional presentation.
The final at the University of York was a whirlwind of activity. Beyond the competition, the students engaged in STEM speed networking with industry professionals and a hands-on session using iPads to control Ozbots. However, the highlight of the day was the formal presentation, where the team stood before a panel of judges to pitch their ideas and answer technical questions.
Their immense effort and teamwork were handsomely rewarded, as the group proudly took home the People’s Choice Award.
A huge well done to our Year 8 team! Oulton Academy would also like to extend a special thank you to Jenna from DRAX for her invaluable mentorship throughout the eight weeks, and to the EDT (Engineering Development Trust) for organising such an inspiring initiative.
