Oulton Academy Students Dig Deep into Construction Careers at Balfour Beatty
Year 10 students from Oulton Academy recently traded their classrooms for a high-vis experience at the prestigious infrastructure and building company Balfour Beatty. This immersive work experience visit offered a firsthand look at the diverse world of large-scale construction and the professional pathways available to the next generation of talent.
Exploring the Industry
The day kicked off with an engaging presentation that showcased the vast variety of projects Balfour Beatty manages. Students learned about the essential infrastructure—from roads and bridges to water systems—that the company develops and maintains across the UK.
Hands-On Practical Sessions
Moving from theory to practice, the group participated in a hands-on session using specialized equipment. Students were taught how to detect underground pipes and cables, gaining a practical understanding of the safety and precision required before any major construction begins.
Meeting the Professionals
A key highlight of the visit was the "speed networking" style opportunity to speak with staff from across the business. Students interviewed professionals in various roles, including:
- Engineers and Project Managers
- Environmental Officers and Site Managers
- Site Operatives and Surveyors
These conversations gave students a realistic look at daily life in the industry and the teamwork necessary to bring complex infrastructure projects to life.
A Sincere Thank You
Oulton Academy would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff at Balfour Beatty for hosting the group. The day was an incredibly insightful experience that allowed our students to see how their current studies translate into rewarding early career opportunities.
