Oulton Academy Students Get a Glimpse of Legal Life at Addleshaw Goddard

A group of ambitious Year 10 students from Oulton Academy recently traded their classrooms for the boardroom, spending an immersive day at the prestigious international law firm Addleshaw Goddard. The visit offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the high-stakes world of corporate and criminal law.

From Banking to Billable Hours
The morning kicked off with an introduction to the firm’s core practice areas. Students explored the diverse sectors that keep a global firm running, including Contract and Commercial law, Dispute ResolutionReal Estate, and Banking and Finance. This overview highlighted that law isn't just about the courtroom—it’s the backbone of global business.

The Power of Words and Evidence
The interactive sessions delved deeper into the technicalities of the profession. During a fascinating session on legal definitions, students discovered how the interpretation of a single word can completely alter the meaning of a statute. This exercise in precision showed the group that in law, language is the most powerful tool available.

The students then stepped into the roles of jurors to analyse a criminal case. After weighing the evidence and debating the facts, the group held a high-pressure vote to decide if the suspect was guilty or not guilty, bringing the complexities of weighing evidence to life.

Fuelled for the Future
After a fantastic lunch provided by Addleshaw Goddard’s in-house catering team, the day concluded with a forward-looking session on career pathways. Staff outlined the various routes into the legal profession, from traditional university degrees to modern legal apprenticeships, proving that a career in law is accessible to those with the drive to succeed.

A Word of Thanks
Oulton Academy would like to extend its sincere thanks to the staff at Addleshaw Goddard for hosting such an informative and inspiring day. Experiences like these are invaluable in helping our students see the real-world application of their studies and sparking the flames of future careers
