Year 9 Students Master the World of Logistics in DHL Careers Finale
Our Year 9 students recently marked the successful conclusion of an intensive three-month careers journey, participating in the final session of the Careers programme delivered by The Talent Foundry in partnership with DHL.
Developing Professional Qualities
Throughout the session, students pivoted from the classroom to the boardroom, exploring the essential professional qualities required to thrive in a modern workforce. Discussions focused on:
- Resilience and Adaptability: Navigating the fast-paced nature of global trade.
- Communication: Mastering the "Dragon's Den" style flair needed to pitch complex ideas.
- Strategic Thinking: Understanding how individual roles collaborate to keep global supply chains moving.
The Ultimate Challenge: A Gorilla-Sized Task
The highlight of the day was a unique logistics and marketing challenge: transporting Kiburi, an 18-year-old silverback gorilla, from Tenerife to London.
Students were tasked with creating a comprehensive marketing and transport strategy for this 1,903-mile journey. Working in teams, they had to:
- Choose the Mode of Transport: Deliberating between planes, lorries, and cargo ships while ensuring the animal’s safety.
- Develop a Marketing Plan: Crafting a strategy to communicate the complexity and success of such a high-stakes operation.
- Pitch to the Experts: Presenting their final concepts to judges, including DHL professionals who oversee restricted commodities and live animal transport.
Celebrating Our Winners
A huge congratulations to our winning group, who impressed the judges by seamlessly integrating all the skills they have acquired over the last three months. Their presentation stood out for its creativity, technical understanding of logistics, and professional delivery.
A Special Thank You
Oulton Academy extends its sincere thanks to the staff from The Talent Foundry and the volunteers from DHL for providing such an engaging and inspiring programme. These meaningful employer interactions are vital in helping our students "think big" about their future career paths.
