West Yorkshire Police Training and Development Centre – Carr Gate

Being a member of the Uniformed Services is a demanding job that requires both command and composure. So that our Year 10 students could see first-hand the stringent training required to make it as a police officer, a group visited the West Yorkshire Police Training and Development Centre at Carr Gate.

The session started with a safety and PPE briefing from one of the lead trainers. The group then climbed the observation tower where they watched two anti-riot training sessions. The sessions were intensive and allowed the group to see how much work is needed to ensure that public order is maintained.

Our Year 10s then toured the Carr Gate facility and had the privilege to speak with police helicopter staff who talked about the practicalities of flying the helicopter. Finally, the group met several of the wonderful horses that are used by the police at public events.

Oulton Academy would like to thank West Yorkshire Police for allowing our students to gain a good understanding of what it is like to be a serving officer and learn about the different careers in the police force.
